vimeo super meetup party (via soxiam)
more photos here. the super meetup was super awesome — like “enter the dragon” only with super friendly martial artists who wanted to chillax and party instead of beating each other. thank you all for showing up from all around the world to make this happen.

One million videos in one day

pile:

Vimeo just broke a major personal record - 1,007,116 videos played in 24 hours.

At it’s peak that’s 17 people hitting play every second. This time last year, we peaked at 190k plays in one day. In January this year, we were at just 220k. After a long hibernation, Vimeo has quadrupled in size in pretty much every dimension in less than six months.

Oh, we also set personal bests for videos uploaded, HD videos uploaded, videos encoded, sign ups, logged in users, comments, and likes. On any given day we usually break one of these, to smash them all at once is awesome.

Here’s a visualization of the past year’s codebase to illustrate the work that went into getting us here. Every dot is a step in the process.

Goddamn I love this job.

Where I stand.

So it is Sunday- the dedicated day for rest and for me to look back on the week and check in. Following up on my post about tracking everything, I am getting into the practice of posting where I stand:

  • Work hours: 38
  • Weight loss: 2 pounds
  • Net Worth: +10.34% for the month
  • Body fat: down 3% to 6.62%

It was a good end of the month, my work hours were heavy (especially since it was a four day work week) I will be compensating to taper down to a 50-55 hour work week over the course of the next month. My net worth is primarily driven by the rebound in stocks (for both my personal stock account and 401K). Next month will be rough with trying to pay for school out of pocket. My body fat is looking good but I still have pounds to shed- this one more than anything is for me and not anyone else. I am not satisfied with my body appearance even though everyone says I look skinny it is more for me.

I came across a post at the Today is that Day blog titled “Are you bringing it or winging it?” and thought it was applicable:

  • People who BRING IT don’t worry about anything. They have truly done everything they can do, so worrying is a complete waste of time.
  • People who just wing it constantly wonder what they could have done better, or what they need to do tomorrow to make up for today’s shortcomings.
  • People who BRING IT may be scratched, beat up, bruised, or bleeding, but they go to bed knowing that they truly fought their best fight, and they are at peace as a result.
  • People who just wing it are masters at coming up with reasons excuses for why they didn’t make an all out effort.
  • People who BRING IT live up to their personal integrity every single day, even if it means a lack of security, or if it means taking a risk.
  • People who just wing it always take the safe route, and they die just a little bit inside each time they give up what they truly want in order to settle for what they believe they can have.
  • People who BRING IT realize that every 60 seconds of their life is another 60 seconds that they can take action towards their goals.
  • People who just wing it always have reasons excuses for why they haven’t yet finished a project, or accomplished a goal.
  • People who BRING IT understand that their position of power is something that they create internally, and that it has nothing to do with the outside circumstances.
  • People who just wing it can always justify their willingness to give up control of their lives with lots of “real world” reasons for why it’s all out of their hands.
  • People who BRING IT also KNOW that they are bringing it, and even if they live in a cardboard box, their cardboard box is the best one on the block because it was built with confidence and pride, not lack and despair.
  • People who just wing it are well aware of the fact that they are winging it, and no matter how successful or unsuccessful they are, the voice in the back of their mind never stops reminding them that their life isn’t what it could be. They are also quite proficient at ignoring that voice.

Geeking out for a moment, Google has pulled off a very cool feature with their docs platform. You can now setup web forms to feed directly into spreadsheets, word docs, etc. This is awesome for an input form without having to setup a stupid DB table to capture info that could be just as easily stored in a spreadsheet. Check out the video below or read about it on the Google Docs blog.

The economy of teeth

Fascinating post on the NY Times Freaknomics blog all about how the better your teeth are (or practically anything with your appearance) the more money you have the aptitude to make….
